Use of Essential Oils for Children and Teenager

Overview

The gentle touch of Oils for babies, children & teenagers- Nothing in the world is more precious to us than our children, and it’s a daunting responsibility to care for them. We all rely heavily on the medical professions to keep our children healthy, and we should continue to take advantage of all the benefits modern medicine can offer us. But there are times when help is not available, when we have to fall back on our own resources, and take the care of our children into our own hands.

Essential oil for enhanced memory for exams

Each essential oil has a unique aroma, of course, but some actually enhance memory recall itself, while others are additionally useful as aids to focus and concentration. These include lemon, peppermint, and rosemary. Bergamot is another useful aroma, as it helps build confidence. It’s essential though that your child actually likes the aroma, and they should be consulted about which essential oils you use.

The other key point to remember is that each subject the child studies — for example, math or history — should be allocated its own aroma. When studying for a math exam, use one particular essential oil, and then use that same aroma for the math exam itself. Use a different aroma both while studying history and taking the history exam. The same applies for any other subject.

While studying, the essential oils can be used in one of the room methods; for example use 3–4 drops in a diffuser. When your child has stopped studying, take the aroma away, then open a window or let some fresh air into the room. When the time comes for the exam, the aroma needs to be introduced again. Obviously, you can’t have the aroma diffused in the exam room! So you have to find a way for your child to be able to smell the aroma just before the exam. The easiest way is to give them a tissue with a drop of the essential oil on it, which they can inhale before the exam. The aroma should be subtle, so dilute the drop of essential oil in a little carrier oil before putting it on the handkerchief. Some people put the drop of essential oil on the cuff of the shirt or jacket, but that can sometimes be too strong and also damage the clothing.

Bath oils for school stress

Some of the bath oils used for school stress are-

  • Chamomile roman (Anthemis nobilis)
  • Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
  • Marjoram, sweet (Origanum majorana)
  • Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
  • Lemon (Citrus limon)
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • Clary sage (Salvia sclarea)
  • Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)
  • Sandalwood (Santalum album)
  • Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium)

Use 2 drops of one of the essential oils above, or follow one of the blends below, which are designed to help a child cope with school stress. First, though, dilute the essential oil in ½ teaspoon of carrier oil before adding to the bathwater. Make sure the oil droplets are well dispersed by swishing the water about with a hand. Any excessive oil droplets that float on the surface can be removed with a paper towel before the child gets into the bath. The amount of essential oil in Blends 1 and 2 below are enough for four baths each.

Essential Oil Bath Blend For School Stress 1

  • Bergamot 2 drops
  • Lavender 2 drops
  • Marjoram, sweet 2 drops
  • Lemon 2 drops

Diluted in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil, this makes enough for four baths.

Essential Oils Bath Blend For School Stress 2

  • Geranium 2 drops
  • Mandarin 4 drops
  • Lavender 2 drops

Diluted in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil, this makes enough for four baths.

A simple remedy is to add 2 drops of lavender essential oil to ½ teaspoon of carrier oil and drop into the bathtub before the child gets into the bath. Afterward, wrap your child up in something cozy and give them a big warm drink and a gentle foot rub. No child can remain uptight after that!

Natural Essential oils for Exam stress

If your child is under 16 years old, use the following blend in a nightly bath for at least a week before the exams. Don’t tell them “it’s for nerves” — that puts the idea into their head that they’re nervous — but instead say it’s to relax and make them feel good, which it is.

PRE-EXAM BATH BLEND FOR CHILDREN UNDER 16

  • Lavender 5 drops
  • Chamomile roman 3 drops
  • Geranium 3 drops
  • Mandarin 5 drops

Blend the essential oils together and use 2 drops diluted in ½ teaspoon of sweet almond oil in each bath.

On the morning of the exam, put 1 drop of grapefruit and 1 drop of lavender, diluted in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil (10 mL), in a bath or on a washcloth to be used after washing.

Pure Essential oils to help child sleep better

Children should be able to sleep soundly without any worries, but life is not always so ideal. Essential oil body oils are very good at reducing stress and helping children to sleep, which will allow them to wake up feeling stronger and ready to face another day. Use a little of the following blend, rubbed onto your child’s back before they go to bed.

SLEEP BLEND

  • Lavender 2 drops
  • Chamomile roman 1 drop
  • Dilute in 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of carrier oil.

Children spend most of their time at home, and parents can provide a relaxing and secure environment for them, where the young person can feel valued and supported. Teenagers in particular need to touch home base, perhaps precisely because they’re now extending their sights outward. Touch is extremely important for everyone, but parents tend to hug their children less as they grow older. Cuddles may seem childish to a teenager, and so massage, which is very grown up, is a good way to get in touch with your child, literally and figuratively. You can simply massage their hands or feet, or the shoulders, back, and legs, or, indeed, the whole body. The following essential oils are particularly good for this purpose. The botanical names can be found in the section that follows, which is organized by age.

What follows are lists of essential oils that can be used on children of particular ages. With each age range, you’ll find the dilution ratio — how much carrier oil to use for diluting the specified number of drops of essential oil. Because with children the dilution ratio is so low, it is often necessary to dilute the essential oils into a large volume of carrier oil. The lists that follow are intended as a general guideline for the home practitioner. Elsewhere in this chapter you’ll find blends for specific conditions that use a higher dilution than that recommended for general use in the age related sections below. This is because those blends address particular problems and are to be used over a short period of time. Generally, refer to the age-related list if using the essential oils for a purpose not covered specifically in this chapter. Undiluted essential oils are not recommended for use on newborn babies. For the home practitioner, particular carrier oils are recommended instead. When preparing for the birth, gather together good-quality carrier oils, by which I mean non-genetically modified organic oils.

The carrier oils to avoid when caring for babies and children are soy, rapeseed, corn, olive, sunflower, and peanut (groundnut or arachis). Sweet almond is an ideal oil for children of all ages; however, if your child has a sensitivity to nuts it is best to avoid any carrier oil extracted from nuts.
